Hobbies

In my free time, I enjoy playing most any sport, but particularly tennis and basketball. I have been playing basketball since 5th grade, and tennis since about 2000. I enjoy tennis more these days, because I don't have as many memories of things that I used to be able to do but can't any more like I do with basketball. I also enjoy golf, but am really not very good at it!

In 2023, I was lucky enough to play in 3 national tennis tournaments.

• The USTA national singles championships in Orlando, FL (March 2023), where I finished 5-2.
• The USTA national doubles championships in Birmingham, AL (April 2023), where my partner and I were runners-up!
• The USTA national mixed doubles league championships in San Diego, CA (November 2023), where my team was voted by our peers as the winners of the sportsmanship award.

• Roger Federer is my favorite tennis player, although now that he's retired, I root for Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner.
• The Detroit Pistons are my favorite NBA team, and Michigan State is my favorite college basketball team (along with Hope, of course)
• Phil Mickelson is my favorite golfer

I also enjoy writing computer programs for fun (at least when I'm not doing it for work too much!) My favorite program that I've written is a game called Photo Match, which I wrote for my kids in 2004. This is a computerized version of the game Memory, using digital pictures as the images that you are trying to match.

For Christmas in 2020, I wrote a web application for my wife to help her plan our meal calendar and organize her shopping list. That one was a lot of fun too!

Favorite Musical Artists

Most often I listen to Contemporary Christian music. Some of my favorite artists in this genre include

• Steven Curtis Chapman: probably my all time favorite artist!
• Casting Crowns: a newer band that has some great songs.
• David Crowder Band: these guys came and led worship at the church I used to attend once!

I also enjoy classical music. In college, I played trumpet in the orchestra, wind ensemble and brass quintet. I also played a few weddings and frequently played Easter and Christmas Eve services at Christ Memorial Church

The scariest place I ever played was my own wedding, where I played the processional. Getting married is enough to make you nervous - I don't recommend playing any music there! I also played Taps at my Grandfather's funeral, which was hard, but my Grandmother requested it, so I had to do it.

My daughter Lauryn got married in the summer of 2021, and my son Nathaniel will be getting married on June 14, 2025!
